Willard Bay and Beyond (100/200km)

 


(Update 2024: Due to ongoing west side highway construction, the southern end of this route has been updated to avoid the active construction areas. )

Introduction These two brevets share the same route for the first 30 miles, after which the 100K riders make a u-turn back home, whereas the 200K group continues north to a c-store/cafe in Corrine, just northwest of Brigham City.


Willard Bay Populaire — 2024 RWGPS Link — 101km Populaire

100.7 km (62.6 miles) with 983 feet of cumulative elevation gain — a pretty flat route.
Time limit: 7:16 hours or finish by 4:16 p.m., assuming a 09:00 start. Route # 1400.


Willard Bay & Beyond — 2024 RWGPS Link — 200km Brevet

200 km (125 miles) with 2026 feet of cumulative elevation gain — a rather flat route.
ACP-Sanctioned time limit: 13:30 hours or finish by 10:30 p.m., assuming a 09:00 start. Route # 1011.


Start Time Check in at 8:30 a.m. with a prompt departure at 9:00. The check in closes five minutes before the start. There will be brief announcements right beforehand. Pre-registration is required. Normally, brevets are held rain or shine, but early-season events, like these, are subject to postponement, if the weather is looking hypothermic (wet and cold).

Route Info These rather flat out-and-back routes start and end in Centerville, Utah, which is about 10 miles north of Salt Lake City. They are a modification of a popular “Super Series” century ride, sponsored by Bonneville Cycling Club. The BCC riders parks at a middle school slightly south of our route, but within a half mile both routes will merge so we can join ranks! (2024 BCC ride is a different week.) These routes are a combination a “rural and city ride” as they travel through Layton, Kaysville, Hooper, Brigham City, ending in Corinne.

Start & Finish Location Walmart at 221 West Parrish Lane, Centerville, 84014 (nearby Bountiful, some 10 miles north of Salt Lake City). From Salt Lake City take exit 319 off I-15 & proceed east for 3/10’s of  mile to the Walmart on your right. Per Ryan the manager, park in the N.W corner of their lot, near Chili’s.

Road Construction This route is heavily affected by road construction in 2024, please use your best judgement in making detours to avoid road construction.

Event Registration (this is different than becoming a RUSA member): If possible, please register 48 hours in advance so we have time to prepare the personalized brevet cards and cue sheets. Since I will also be riding with the group, I cannot wait for late comers (I will leave your brevet card on my windshield if you notify me). This event will be held rain or shine.

Proof of Passage: Either traditional paper proof-of-passage, or electronic proof-of-passage will be acceptable for SLR brevets. For paper, fill out your brevet card during the ride and turn it in at the end of the ride as usual. For electronic, please send a link to your gps track (strava, ridewithgps, garmin, etc) within 24 hours after the ride to ken84010@gmail.com. If you plan to use electronic, please make sure your gps device has enough battery life to last until the end of the ride. Many riders use external batteries to ensure their device records the entire ride.

Cue Sheet A detailed cue sheet and brevet card will be provided at check in, or the GPS file will be available for download. If you wish to preview the cue sheet, a PDF version can be e-mailed to you upon request, or one will be sent out to everyone on the Google E-Mail Group, about a week before the event date.

Support This is a “self-supported” brevet. This means you will resupply at convenience stores or cafes along the route. There will be no SAG support and riders must apply principles of self-reliance. I will be at the start to handle registration, but since I will be riding with the group, so I cannot provide support during this ride.

If any of you have a friend or spouse that can help drive part of the route, please let me know. If they do provide support, it needs to neutral — that is equal support for all riders.

If you have to abandon the brevet, please call or text me, so I don’t wait for you at the finish.

Reminders This is a self-supported event, so bring cash for stops at various convenience stores. Also have a pen in your bag in case the route requires answering an “Information Checkpoint.”

If You Are Late Please call me so I can arrange to leave you a cue sheet and brevet card. You can start up to an hour after the official start time, but subsequent checkpoint cut-off times will remain the same, as if you had started with everyone else. If you know in advance, or wake up Saturday morning and decide not to ride, please let me know so I won’t worry about you at the start. I will not be checking e-mail on Saturday, so please call or text.
